To perform a wedding ceremony in Minnesota, you must register with a Minnesota county prior to performing the ceremony. No credentials are required to register with the county. (M.S. 517.04)
To file in Houston County; you must be 21 years of age, complete the Certificate of Filing and submit a $50 filing fee. The certificate of filing form can be returned in person or by mail.
Tips for Marriage Officiants
Couples who complete their marriage application in Houston County will receive their marriage license, blank marriage certificate and return envelope at the time they complete the application process. The marriage license should be kept by the officiant as proof of your authority to solemnize the marriage. The marriage certificate needs to be properly completed by the officiant. Any omissions on the marriage certificate will result in a delay of issuance of the certified copy to the couple.
- A Minnesota marriage license can only be used in the state of Minnesota.
- The couple and witnesses must be present at the ceremony and the officiant must view the ID for all four people. (M.S. 517.06)
- Witnesses must be 16 years of age or older and have ID.
- Witnesses must print their name and sign the marriage certificate.
- Officiant must print his/her name, sign and indicate Minnesota county where officiant registered.
- Applicants must sign their names.
- The completed, original marriage certificate should be returned to our office within 5 days of completion of the ceremony to avoid a penalty. (M.S. 517.13)
